A new batch of this ‘teaspooned’ Speyside whisky is another 21 Year Old, a release of just 181 bottles.
There are only five classifications allowed in Scotch Whisky; Single Malt, Single Grain, Blended Malt, Blended Grain, and Blended Scotch, and so as this whisky was sold to us as a ‘Blended Malt’ we can’t label it any other way. (Teaspooned/Blended my arse)
‘Teaspooning’ is not a recognised classification for bottling, but is still common within the industry, and you will see casks labeled with their brand names; Burnside, Westport, Wardhead, and others, in warehouses, but always as a blended malt.
‘Teaspooning’ was started in the 1980’s by William Grant & Sons. By ‘teaspooning’ their malts, they protect their brand from Independent bottlers from releasing casks bought on the open market as single malts.
NOSE
Fruity! Stewed apples, pears and plums, green melon, chalk, honey and a hint of beeswax too.
TASTE
Tasty! Green apples and juicy greengages initially, then orange barley water. Honey and beeswax come across in the palate too.
Cracking stuff!
ABOUT THE LABEL
Our inspiration comes from Star Trek, and a riff on ‘The Final Frontier’ movie poster. That’s the USS Wardhead (or an upside down still) complete with two teaspoons, with our two lead characters who you might recognise
For comic effect we’ve added some shockingly bad puns “Stand Fast and Prosper”, “Fiddle Neck”, and “The Fine and Rare Deer” which I’m sure you can all work out for yourselves.
