A classic 11 Year Old Balblair that we’ve finished in a First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrel.
One of Scotland’s oldest distilleries, Balblair was founded in 1790 by John Ross. The distillery lies in Edderton in the Northern Highlands, surrounded by rugged mountains, from whence the Allt Dearg - Balblair’s water source - springs.
The distillery was mothballed in 1911 due to tough economic times. It remained closed until 1949. It was commandeered during the Second World War and became home to the Norwegian Army for the duration.
Production resumed in 1949, and in 1996 was bought by its current owners Inver House Distillers.
Clear worts, long fermentation in wooden washbacks, and distillation in small, stumpy stills produces a richly fruity new make character alongside a sulphury/meaty note.
We’re expecting around 292 bottles of this Highland malt.
NOSE
All the bananas! Green banana, foam bananas, and there’s even some banana custard! Vanilla with a pinch of pepper, and some caramelised apple.
Delightful!
TASTE
Sweet and creamy. Vanilla custard, white chocolate, Chai Latte, green banana, a little herbal, and a good pinch of pepper
Loveable!
ABOUT THE LABEL
Our Balblair label was inspired by the film Angel’s Share and features the Balblair distillery with its lettered barrels out the front of the distillery. Two kilted men disguised as hikers, and hiding behind bushy sprigs, have bottles poking out of their rucksacks which almost look like Irn Bru.
This was a little trickier, as our two shady central characters were hidden behind the bushes, but the ever creative Emily Chappell turned this around, and also one of the two shady characters around, still holding onto their bush… It’s in our core Highland colours too
