We’re really excited about this Glen Grant, as we’ve not seen a lot of it available on the market. Laid down in October 1991 and matured in a single refill hoggie.
Light and apple fresh is the character which defines Glen Grant and this desire for delicacy has been present ever since ‘The Major’ took charge in the late 19th century.
The main driver of lightness is the shape of the stills which have almost square boil bulbs which increase copper surface significantly. They are also fitted with purifying chambers in the lyne arm which act as a pre-condenser, refluxing back heavy elements which are carried down a purifier pipe into the body of the still.
Glen Grant itself was one of the first whisky “brands”. You could find Glen Grant in Africa, Australia and the US in the late 19th century, a brand before the term had been invented.
NOSE
Subtle citrus notes; candied orange peel. Dried fruit; apricots and figs, alongside tinned peaches in syrup. Pronounced vanilla later with a backdrop of well-integrated oak.
TASTE
A luxurious and creamy mouthfeel, a result of the extended maturation. Butterscotch sweetness, tropical fruits; tinned pineapple and mango. Gentle spices,, intertwined with well-defined oak notes.
Classy!
ABOUT THE LABEL
Solar Flare - A little tenuous, we know, but Glen Grant is owned by Campari and Campari originally (before 2006) took its colour from cochineal and cochineal are insects that live on cacti and cacti love the sun. Ok, whatever. Then that’s the Major’s POV looking back on planet earth escaping the ravages of a solar flare. Ground control to Major Grant?
Planet earth is through, and there’s nothing I can do…
