he Ben Nevis distillery was founded way back in 1825 by ‘Long John’ McDonald. John McDonald was a huge man, and a blended Scotch still bears his name.
This 26 Year Old hails from a single butt laid down in November 1996 and untouched since - Beauty. We’re expecting just 533 bottles.
The distillery had a troubled 80s, production first stopping in 1978. There were short periods of production in the early 80s before falling silent again. In 1989 Nikka Whisky bought the distillery and production resumed in 1990.
When Nikka took over control of the distillery, two distinctive spirits were made: One destined for Ben Nevis single malt, the other being shipped to Japan as new make spirit.
NOSE
Clean. Initially chalky, flinty, before some sunflower oil, candle wax. Fruit follows;hints of mango, and gooseberry fool.
Obviously this is no first-fill butt!
TASTE
The waxiness comes across on the palate too, and you could be forgiven for thinking you have a Clynelish in the glass! Juicy fruits; Passion fruit, papaya and overripe mango. A little pepper in the finish.
Wow
ABOUT THE LABEL
Super Volcano - Super Volcanoes occur when magma in the mantle rises into the crust but is unable to break through it. Pressure builds in a large and growing magma pool until the crust is unable to contain the pressure and BOOM!
Ben Nevis is actually the remains of one of Scotland’s ‘Super Volcanoes’
