Caol Ila
Caol Ila
REGION: Islay
STYLE: Single Malt Scotch Whisky
ABV: 45.8%
AGE: 12 Years
RRP: £64.95
Our first 70cl release from the Caol Ila distillery is a 12 Year Old, thats been finished in an ex-rum barrel, and why not? Maturation in rum casks will bring out the fruitier notes from this Islay whisky.
We’re expecting to get around 349 bottles at 45.8% abv.
For a long time Caol Ila was only available as a single malt by visiting the distillery or through independent bottlers. Initially made available via a release in the Flora and Fauna series, the first official releases came in 2002. Known for its peated style of malt (same ppm as Lagavulin) up to 30% of production is now unpeated.
NOSE
Strong wafts of wood, tropical fruit, and salt and pepper with underlying subtle creaminess
TASTE
Creamy sweeter notes emerge from the salinity, while more ripe fruit and a hint of ginger arrive
ABOUT THE LABEL
The view from the Caol Ila still house across to the Paps of Jura is perhaps one of the greatest in Scotland, and so we wanted to capture that on our original Caol Ila label. The name Jura derives from the Norse and means ‘deer island’ and red deer outnumber people by almost 30 fold there.
We then added Prince Vultan from a certain epic 1980s movie, charging across the water with Jura's famed deer population in tow!
For this new label, we’ve brought Prince Vultan front and centre, but you can still see the original label behind, shaded in the same green as our core Islay label. You can just about make out the seagull hitting the window in the top left hand corner that appeared on Batch 23
