Our second peated release from Taiwan’s Nantou, following up from our highly popular bottling in our 10th Anniversary series.
Here’s another classic example of their peated single malt, malted in an ex-bourbon hogshead. It won’t last long!
While the Nantou distillery is slightly older than the more well known Kavalan distillery, whisky production didn’t start until 2008.
The Nantou Distillery is a Government owned business (Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation) and sold in bottle as “Omar”.
Production techniques are modelled after those utilised in Scotland in the 80s. Malted barley is imported from Scotland and ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks are used for the maturation.
NOSE
Cloudy lemonade, sweet vanilla, apricot and ripe apple, alongside chalky grist, salty seaspray, and some sooty peat smoke. You could be forgiven for thinking this was coastal Islay
TASTE
Mouth-coating, oily malt leads the way for a hefty hit of spice. Smouldering embers and earthy ash are lifted by a touch of sweet apricot and citrus zest.
ABOUT THE LABEL
Our label is how we imagined the first explorers finding this site in the idyllic Nantou region of Taiwan
Our intrepid explorer is armed with a bindle of peated malt and his guide to peat as he makes his way to a pier on the Sun Moon lake.
Native flora and fauna surround him; Plum blossom trees, banana plants, fruit trees, Blue Magpies, and watch out for that Taiwanese Leopard Cat.
