Emperor’s Way is the name of the peated/smoky whiskies created by Hammerschmiede, the makers of Elsburn (formerly Glen Els).
The name Emperor's Way is based upon the main route through the Harz mountains which was used by kings and even the Kaiser himself during medieval times.
This particular whisky is from a first-fill Japanese Mizunara cask, one of the most expensive and sought after types of cask. The distillery was only able to acquire two of these casks, one of which will be a distillery exclusive bottling, the other kindly being offered to Boutique-y.
The malt for this whisky was smoked using local German peat, something very rarely seen.
The combination of this and the Mizunara cask makes this a highly unique and special whisky.
Mizunara oak has a curious ring to it. Much scarcer than European and American oak, and much more expensive, its story is deeply rooted in Japanese history. I’ve heard there are many difficulties working with mizunara: The oak does not grow straight, it has a high moisture content and it’s much more porous than other varieties. These issues make the casks prone to leaking. Its name, apparently, translates to “water oak.”
NOSE
Fragrant, with vanilla pods, sandalwood, and sweet clover honey. Digestive biscuits, a hint of coffee, and gentle wood smoke follows.
TASTE
Light and delicate on the palate. Honey sweetness is balanced by the woody spices..
A soft earthy peat reek lingers and there’s some chilli heat in the finish.
